Research Essay Rubric & Reminders

English 103 .0887 & .0888 classes,

I hope you have all had a joyous Thanksgiving Weekend so far!

First, I would like to make the research essay grading rubric available to all! Please click HERE to view it.

Second, I want to remind you all that the last day I will accept any late work/revisions of previous work in this class will be this upcoming Sunday (December 1st) until the very end of the day which means 11:59 pm. After that, I'm not accepting anything from you except your final research papers that should be delivered in hard copy (and sent in email) the day of your last class which is on Wednesday December 4th and Thursday December 5th.

Also, I am still working on your revisions and/or late work. So if you have submitted any revisions to me, just wait for it! I will be sending everything back with your grades/my comments by tomorrow and Saturday at the latest.

Please email me if you have any questions about anything regarding this class and the final research paper :)

Monday/Tuesday Classes Cancelled!!

English 103.0887 and 103.0888 Classes,

Congratulations on all of your hard work and for being able to complete the first draft of your research paper! It wasn't easy, that's certain. I still haven't received everyone's drafts so I hope I will be getting them soon! In fact, to award you further for your completion of the draft, I have decided to grade your drafts not based on the official rubric but based on the completion of the assignment itself i.e. I will give you the full 10% if you were able to submit a completed draft before the designated deadline, give you feedback on the essay itself, and state what grade your essay could potentially get 'so far'. This way, you can take the next 3 weeks to revise without having to worry about revising to bring your 'draft grade' up and just worry about your final product!

So, for the draft, I'm not giving you a 'grade' as I have been giving your previous assignments. You will get the full 10% as long as you have submitted it on time and provided a completed work. Just like other assignments, for every class day that it is late, I will deduct one "grade point" which will be percentages taken off the full 10%. If you have not submitted your papers by 5 today, then whether you send it as soon as you read this or you send it before your classes on Monday/Tuesday (depending on your section) you will still be getting one grade point taken off. So if you are not done yet, might as well finish it then send it!

As for Monday/Tuesday classes, we do not have a full class. You are just required to come to class for 5 minutes to meet with me to talk about your paper aka "conferences". If you were absent on Wednesday/Thursday, you must sign up for a time that you can come. I will post the times that are still available for both classes. If you were absent, please leave a comment to this blog entry OR email me and let me know what time you can come.

Eng 103.0887, I do not have a copy of the times that everyone has signed up for. So please, email/reply to this blog stating the time you signed up for please!

Eng 103.0888, these are the times still available:
2:25-2:30
2:50-2:55

Again, congratulations on all your hard work! Take the weekend off to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Best Wishes,
Ginger

Resource Folder & Works Cited Page Due This Week!!

Hey guys! I wanted to just remind you about the next assignment coming up this week! You must submit your Works Cited page and Final Resource Folders in hard copy to your specific class on Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th.

Your works cited page is basically one page where you cite ALL sources used or will use in your final research essay. Remember you must have at least 7 sources. Make sure you use correct MLA citation style (refer to book) and indentation (as you did for the Annotated Bibliography).

In addition, please be reminded that you must bring a hard copy of your final resource folder (in a folder, I will not accept anything without a folder so it will be considered late and one grade point will be reduced from the overall 3% remaining of your overall final grade). Your resource folder must have at the same sources you include in your works cited page.

Hope you have already begun writing your first drafts!

Extra Credit Assignment

There are now officially 5 weeks of classes left. As I mentioned in class, you have the opportunity to receive the full 10% of your blog grade. If you have not been posting on your blog on a weekly basis, here is the opportunity to get the points that you are missing.

I have already begun to see your blog entries exactly along with the dates posted and whether they have been posted on a weekly basis or not. If you are missing one or two or five posts (meaning you haven't posted anything so far), for every post you are missing, you must go through the blogs, find a classmate (from either sections of this course) who has the same topic [if it is impossible to find the same exact topic then you can find a person who is also, like you, is doing it on a topic other than the list I gave] and post a comment. So, you will post a comment to one of their blog entries (the same amount you would put as a blog entry meaning at least 4-5 sentences/lines). For every comment you make, I will count it as one blog entry (that you may be missing). Remember, by the last week of classes, you must have 10 blog entries in total.

However, if you are already up to date with your blog entries, you can still take advantage of this extra credit assignment. You must post 5 comments in total (4-5 sentences/lines each) for different people if you wish, one of those people must be someone doing the same topic as yourselves. As a reward, I will add one full grade to your FINAL grade. This means, if your final grade comes to a B+, you will get an A-. If your final grade is a B-, you will get a B. If your final grade is a B, you will get a B+ and so on. One full grade. Remember, this "reward" is only for people who are already up to date with their blogs thus far and do not need extra points to get that full 10%!

You may email me or post a comment to this blog if you do not understand something or just ask me in class next week. I will see you all on Monday/Tuesday. Don't forget your outlines are due today by 5pm!

Best,
Ginger
